We all had some kind of dental pain. However, there are many of us who hate visiting the dentist. And I am sure, there are many people who do not know when they should wait and when to see the dentist. In this report I will try to mention the common dental symptoms, their causes and what is needed to be done. And I hope it will be beneficial to you:
1- Momentary sensitivity to hot or cold:
If this discomfort lasts only moments and does not linger, it does not signal a serious problem. It could be cause by a loose filling or gum recession that causes root exposure.
Try using toothpastes made for sensitive teeth. don`t brush horizontally because it causes the gums to wear away and expose the roots. Try brushing in an up and down motion with a soft brush. If the sensitivity persisted, visit your general dentist.
2- Sensitivity to hot or cold foods after dental treatment:
Dental work may cause some inflammation to the pulp of the nerves insides the tooth, which will cause temporary sensitivity. Wait two to four weeks, if the pain persisted, see you general dentist.
3- Sharp pain when biting down on food:
The cause for this pain vary. It could be tooth decay, loose filling or crack in the tooth. There could be some damage to the pulp tissue inside the tooth.
See you dentist for evaluation. You may need a referral for an endodontist if the pulp is damaged.
4- Lingering pain after eating hot or cold foods:
Probably there is some damage to the pulp due to decay or trauma. You need to see an endodontist to save your tooth.
5- Constant and severe pain and pressure, swelling of the gum and sensitivity to touch:
The presence of an abscess is expected here, causing the surrounding gum and bone to become infected.
You need to see an endodontis for an evaluation and treatment to relief your pain and save the tooth. Try over the counter pain killers to help you with pain. If you don`t have hypertension nor asthma, take Ibuprofin 600mgs every 8 hours for patients over 12 years old.
6- Dull ache and pressure in the upper teeth and the jaw:
The pain of a sinus headache is often felt in the face and teeth which usually confuses the patient. Making him/her think it is a tooth ache. Grinding the teeth (Bruxism) can also cause the same pain in the jaw.
Try over the counter pain killers for the sinus pain or see an ENT specialist. For bruxism, consult your dentist, if your pain is severe and chronic you may need to see an endodontist.
At the end, I would like to mention here that I mentioned the most common symptoms. However, there are not all dental symptoms a patient can experience. The causes and treatments suggested can differ between one patient to another. All what I was trying to do here, is to help you finding out the possible cause of your pain and what to do .
With all my wishes for you of a healthy life...
Warm Regards...
